On Friday, September 16 Mecca Lecca and AHA present XIXA in the Solana Center at 915 W Alameda. Doors at 8:30, show at 9:00. Thieves & Gypsys open. UPDATE: THIS EVENT HAS A NEW VENUE. It is now being held at EL MUSEO CULTURAL in the Railyard.
XIXA hails from the Tucson indie rock scene, where core members Brian Lopez and Gabriel Sullivan have collaborated with acts like Giant Sand and Calexico. As XIXA, Lopez and Sullivan are creating something entirely different and purposeful – “a brilliant example of artists using pieces of their heritage and reconfiguring those elements into something fresh and new.†(Agitreader)
As members of second- and third-generation Mexican immigrant families in Tucson, Lopez and Sullivan began a side project a few years ago that focused on what they called “psychedelic cumbia†music. Before long they had developed a more experimental take on traditional Peruvian chicha, integrating reverb and electronics to evoke the stark eeriness of the desert to accompany the concepts of heritage, identity, blood and darkness. The sound is taking off: In 2016 alone, XIXA has released their Shift and Shadow EP, their first full-length album Bloodline, played SXSW and toured Europe.
This event is $10 presale, $12 at the door.
“I’m always up for a startling awakening, one that opens my eyes or ears to a refreshing new perspective that breaks rules and reconstructs a new narrative. I’m describing the music of XIXA.†Latino Rebels
“Bloodline is the first chapter in what one hopes is a long, epic career for XIXA, and a record that stands up to the past in an unflinching way, giving deference to its forbears but creating something sparkling and real that talks about today in direct turns.†Agitreader
About Thieves & Gypsys: THIEVES & GYPSYS is an indie rock’n’roll band from Santa Fe, New Mexico. That started in early 2011 in a small crammed room with Jared Garcia and Dave Vigil elbow to elbow penning out small songs. The band emerged once they added bassist Aaron Jones. The trio would soon be voted “BEST NEW BAND” in the Santa Fe Reporter “Best of Santa Fe 2012”Â
